A trauma therapist you don’t have to explain yourself to.

You know what you need to do, but feel frozen when you try.

It’s not because you’re broken. It’s unprocessed trauma and pain in the way.

You intellectualize all day about what could change, but when it comes down to it, you’re still stuck.

I’ve been in recovery for over half my life.

From alcohol, drug abuse, and the sting of complex trauma. I grew up in a challenging environment, and over the past 34 years, I have personally walked the path of recovery.

Sober for 7 years, relapsed and struggled for 7 more years, and sober for the last 20 years. For over half of my life, I have worked to address recurring difficulties and cycles of behavior-recognizing the patterns of trauma is a critical step in the process. I have learned that a person cannot change what they will not acknowledge, and cannot acknowledge what they do not know is there. At the heart of recovery is the work of tending to the inner child-the part of yourself that was wounded, frightened, and left alone.

Healing is not about forgetting the past, but about reclaiming the innocence and hope that was lost. Then, you can gradually build a foundation of trust and self-love strong enough for lasting change.

Leigh Owens

LPC/MHSP-Licensed Professional Counselor

My past is what shaped my purpose.

I first graduated from the University of Georgia in 1988. When I went back to school years later,  it was with a clear purpose.

In 2012, I earned my Masters in Education focused on Mental Health Counseling from Lincoln Memorial University. After completing my degree, I dedicated myself to gaining hands-on experience in the field, immersing myself in diverse clinical environments that deepened my understanding and compassion. I worked in an addiction treatment center while opening my private practice, and now I offer in-person and telehealth counseling services for clients in all in different stages of recovery. I also serve as both a teacher and therapist at the Serenity Shelter, an 18-month program designed to support homeless women through a comprehensive, faith-based approach.

My path to becoming a trauma therapist wasn’t just professional, it’s personal, because I’ve walked in your shoes. I’m proof that healing is possible—you just need to be shown how.

I specialize in trauma counseling and addiction recovery, and know firsthand the struggle to become healthy again.

Helping those who are suffering is my passion.

Trauma therapy isn’t easy, but when you have the right support at the right time, you can start the process. I use a mix of non-pathologizing therapeutic modalities to uncover the root issues behind the behaviors and thoughts that cause you pain.

Please know that healing happens here every day. If I didn’t believe it were possible, there would be no reason for me to be in practice.

I am a follower of Christ with love as my worldview. My intention is to show you the same grace that our Creator has for all of us. If I can untangle 45 years of my own substance abuse and trauma, I promise you that, together, we can untangle yours too.

You’ve weathered enough storms.

It’s time to bring

the sunshine back.
